Community Partnerships, Outreach, and Volunteer/Staff Appreciation: A Look Back at August
Community Partnerships, Outreach, and Volunteer Appreciation: A Look Back at August
As summer continued, August provided many opportunities to connect with residents, support public safety initiatives, strengthen community partnerships, and celebrate the volunteers who make so much of our work possible. From outreach events and community cleanups to training workshops and collaborative safety initiatives, our team remained focused on fostering a safer, healthier, and more connected Gastown Hastings Crossing community.
Community Outreach and Engagement
This month, we were pleased to partner with 529 Garage and HUB Cycling for a bike registration and safety pop-up. The event helped residents register and better protect their bicycles while also promoting cycling as a healthy and sustainable transportation option.
Throughout August, we hosted two Pigeon Park Community Outreach Pop-Ups, creating opportunities to connect with residents in an informal and welcoming setting. Along with sharing information about our programs and services, we provided refreshments to help community members stay hydrated during the summer heat and distributed practical safety items including personal alarms and flashlights.
Our monthly Senior's Event took the form of a neighborhood walk, providing participants with an opportunity to socialize, stay active, and engage with the community in a relaxed and supportive environment.
We also marked Overdose Awareness Day with a community pop-up in Gastown. The event provided an opportunity to share information and resources while encouraging important conversations about overdose prevention, harm reduction, and community wellness.
Caring for Public Spaces and Building Community Connections
Throughout August, we continued our twice-monthly Community Cleanups, bringing volunteers and residents together to help care for the neighborhood we all share.
We were also pleased to join Académie Duello, Nesters Market, the Gastown Residents Association, and other community partners at two Hastings Crossing BIA Friday Lunch Meets, held on Abbott Street and Carrall Street.
These gatherings serve multiple purposes, helping activate public spaces while creating opportunities for meaningful engagement between residents, businesses, and community organizations. During both events, we had several valuable conversations with community members, resulting in increased bike registrations and even a new volunteer application! Moments like these demonstrate the importance of creating welcoming spaces where community connections can flourish.
Strengthening Community Partnerships
Collaboration remained a key focus throughout the month.
We continued our ongoing partnership with the Hastings Crossing BIA through our monthly stakeholder meeting, maintaining strong communication and exploring opportunities for future collaboration and community initiatives.
We also partnered with both the West End Coal Harbour Community Policing Centre and the Downtown Community Policing Centre to participate in ICBC Speed Watch events. Working alongside volunteers and community partners, these initiatives helped raise awareness about speeding and encouraged safer driving behaviours throughout the city.
Programs such as Speed Watch play an important role in promoting road safety for residents, pedestrians, cyclists, and visitors alike while reinforcing the value of collaborative approaches to community safety.
Public Health and Safety Education
Education and preparedness continued to be important priorities this month. We hosted a Naloxone Training Workshop, providing participants with practical knowledge and hands-on training to help recognize and respond to overdose emergencies.
These sessions remain an important part of our commitment to harm reduction, community wellness, and empowering residents to support one another during critical situations.
Volunteer Development and Recognition
Our volunteers continue to be at the heart of our community safety efforts.
In August, we continued our monthly Volunteer Orientation and Volunteer Foot Patrol Training sessions, helping new and existing volunteers build the skills and confidence needed to support community engagement and safety initiatives.
We were also pleased to host a Volunteer Appreciation Event to recognize and thank volunteers for their ongoing contributions to the community. The event provided an opportunity to celebrate the dedication, energy, and commitment that volunteers bring to our programs throughout the year.
The gathering also marked an important staff transition. We said farewell to our Programs Manager, Ryan, who has successfully been recruited into the Vancouver Police Department Training Academy. We thank Ryan for his contributions and wish him every success in this exciting next chapter!
In the wake of Ryan’s departure, we are pleased to welcome our new Programs Manager, Igor. Igor has been with the CPC for many months as a volunteer and a Team Lead and we look forward to the experience, ideas, and leadership he will bring to the organization!
Looking Ahead
August highlighted the importance of collaboration, community engagement, and volunteerism in building safer and more connected neighborhoods. Whether through outreach initiatives, public safety education, community cleanups, or partnerships with local organizations, each activity contributed to strengthening relationships and supporting community wellbeing.
As always, we extend our sincere thanks to our volunteers, partners, residents, and supporters who continue to make this work possible. We look forward to building on this momentum in September and creating even more opportunities for connection, learning, and community engagement.
