Earth Day Community Cleanup a Big Success!

EARTH DAY AT GHXCPC

Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22 as a reminder that environmental protection is a shared responsibility. What started in the 1970s as a small movement has grown into a global effort. It serves as a day to recognize how we can reduce our environmental footprint and work together as a community to help build a healthier and more resilient planet.

It is a reminder to think about how we can make changes, whether big or small, to help the community. This could include adding a compost or recycling bin to your kitchen space, or picking up litter when you see it.

GHXCPC celebrated Earth Day in a few ways. On Earth Day itself, we set up our tent in the Woodward’s Atrium to bring awareness to Earth Day in a fun and engaging way. We handed out green cotton candy, hosted a “Spin the Earth Day Trivia Wheel” game, and distributed brochures and pamphlets on both Earth Day and the importance of CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design).

On Saturday, we held our large community clean-up, with 11 volunteers rolling up their sleeves and going out into the community to make it a cleaner and brighter space for everyone. We picked up 16 bags of garbage, as well as over two dozen needles, and reported biohazards and large waste items for removal.

A community clean-up may seem simple, but its effects ripple throughout the community far beyond simply picking up litter off the streets. Physically, it improves the appearance and health of a neighbourhood by removing waste that can harm wildlife, clog drainage systems, or create hazards. Socially, it builds a sense of pride and ownership among residents, strengthening community bonds.

From a safety perspective, clean environments discourage illegal dumping, vandalism, and other forms of disorder. This connects directly to the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, which emphasize how thoughtful design and maintenance of spaces can reduce crime and improve quality of life.

The staff at the GHXCPC would like to thank everyone who attended both the Atrium event and the clean-up. Your support and dedication to the community mean a lot and are truly making an impact.
